Where in the WORD do I start?
May I suggest that you
get one of our “Read the Bible through” guides and begin the
wonderful journey of not just reading parts of God’s Word, but all
of it. You will be rewarded as you read the Old Testament, for
example, about heroes and heroines, men and women who were made just
as we are, full of possibilities as well as the ability to make
really bad decisions that affected entire nations.
As you follow the guide,
you’ll also notice that the days will generally match up in theme
and content. In other words, many of the readings will complement
each other as you read different accounts about the same person from
different books of the Bible. For example, you may read about a king
from the historical or biographical nature in one book and from a
prophet’s perspective in another as the prophet received the Word of
God to speak words of warning or encouragement to the king. For a
better understanding of how this works, do a study of King Josiah
which I’ve outlined below. This will help you see how powerful this
reading plan can be.
Throughout the whole of
the Bible you will follow, as the writers of old correctly named it,
the scarlet thread of redemption. All of God’s Word is teaching us
the account of our journey away from God and then returning to the
glory of the original relationship we were created to enjoy, as He
redeemed us on the Cross of Calvary.
But however you read it,
READ IT! Read one Proverb per day to coincide with the calendar.
Read through one book at a time. However you do it, do it regularly
and with a heart that seeks to meet and spend quality time with “God
who loves us and gave Himself for us.”
